Artist's reflection: In this painting, a beam of light enters the staircase opening and there is an instant warmth in the cold air. The cold and solitude of the upstairs and downstairs are therefore no more. 
 
The silence in Zhang’s paintings comes from the peacefulness of his soul. In his paintings, it is as though each color is painted on a limestone colored wall. The colors used are infiltrated by gray and white tones – thus losing their original strength, but softly and elegantly blending together.
